Details:
A number of forest fires in the vicinity of British Columbia have covered the sky in Vancouver area with smoke during some periods this summer, including some weeks in July, August, and the first week of September. On the morning of September 5th, I took the kids outside to look at the sun, which was pretty in red... I snapped some pictures with a camera that has 50x optical zoom. We then noticed three sunspots that were clearly visible, including the one that a hurled a CME towards Earth from the impressive X9.3 solar flare, on that day. I had no filters installed on the camera (Canon SX50 HS), so we are grateful for the smoke cover above, although it prevents us from potentially seeing the auroras.
