Details:
On 26 July the three day old Waxing Crescent Moon with Mare Crisium clearly visible shone brightly in the evening sky over Mutare. After taking a close-up photograph (first picture) I noticed that it was also being reflected from the completely calm surface of the water in my floodlit swimming pool (second picture). A few minutes later a bubble in the water floated on to the reflection enlarging Mare Crisium so much that for a moment I thought a new impact crater had formed! (third photo). The animation prepared from two photographs taken at the same magnification before and during this extraordinary coincidence shows the remarkable illusion taking place. The camera used was a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 in sunset scene mode.
