Details:
The photos show the 25-hour-old crescent Moon, only 1.7% illuminated, over Rio de Janeiro between 17:46 and 18:03 (UTC-3h) as its altitude varied from 7.0° to 3.6° degrees. Mars, although only 18° from the Sun, is also seen in the first photo (extreme right) as well as Zeta Tauri (top right). This moon is special for two reasons: (1) it is only 357.4 thousand km from us an thus unusually big (33.4' in diameter) ; (2) It is important to Muslim culture as it marks the beginning of Ramadan. A Sony HX200 camera has been used for the shots.
