It's been interesting going out photographing auroras on the last two nights with temperatures dropping below -30C here in Lapland. I've been more or less fine since I have good winter clothing, but my Nikon D600 has barely been able to handle it (last night I got a 'card error' several times), but surprisingly one full battery lasted on both nights some 4h sessions without even taking out of the camera to warm up! Yesterday night I was heading home already around midnight after spending more than 2 hours on a remote bog here in Rovaniemi shooting some pretty decent auroras. But all of a sudden, on the way home, just after local midnight, I noticed from my rear mirror that the sky had just exploded into incredibly fast moving curtains of green, pink and white. I had to stop the car on the side of the road, and soon I got to witness the most incredible aurora show I've ever seen! It evolved into fast pulsing and flashing coronas that lasted for an hour or so. Best way I could describe it is that it looked like the whole sky was a big ember on a camp fire! Warmed me up a bit although I felt quite cold by then. It was just mind blowing and I was just hoping that somebody would be recording it with a decent video equipment!
