This is a geosynchronous satellite. They show up a lot when imaging Orion Nebula. It works out that M42 is just south of celestial equator and when imaging from the northern hemisphere the satellites will show up being just south of the celestial equator also. With your drive turned off the satellite would appear as a point and the nebula and stars would be trailed the same length as your satellite trail.
