Details:
Here is a photo of a rainbow which has been going on now for over 2-1/2 hours. It's unusual to see a noontime rainbow because the sun is usually so high in the sky that any rainbow would be down below horizon level. In this case, because we are in the middle of winter, the sun is very low in the southern sky resulting in this geometry and a rainbow forming directly the north. Secondly, most of us seldom get rain in the middle of December, but we are having an unusually strong air flow from the Pacific Ocean beyond Los Angeles which is very warm and wet. And thirdly, the constant strong and humid air flow associated with a storm due tomorrow is being forced up and over the 10,000 foot mountains west of Las Vegas, only to condense into rain which the strong winds are then forcing to fall far to the east of the mountains directly in view of my north-facing office window, forming this hours-long rainbow.
