Yesterday evening, 15 Dec, there was a lull between afternoon showers and evening rain during which some iridescent clouds developed under the anvil of a threatening cumulonimbus (first picture). This was a few minutes after the setting sun had disappeared behind some other clouds along the western horizon. A short time later portions of the iridescent clouds became brightly colored and one became bird-shaped (second picture). At 18.28 LT, five minutes after local sunset time, a small contracting remnant of iridescent cloud became brighter until it shone like a Phantom Sun (third picture). This caused a temporary increase in evening twilight bathing the landscape below (final image). The phenomenon, which lasted less than five minutes, took place almost directly above the point on the horizon where the Sun would otherwise have set. The photographs were taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 camera in intelligent auto mode.
