Details:
this is from october 21st five years ago, in 2011. The Orionids are coming and they offer a nice opportunity to try to see the long looooong earthgrazers that fly across much or all the sky just when the radiant of the meteor shower is smack on the horizon. This was in Crans-Montana a resort in the swiss Alps. At 11 PM this Orionid earthgrazer appeared and crossed the entire sky in several seconds ( estimate 3-4 seconds ) from right to left ( northeast to northwest ). This image taken with Canon EOS 550D and EF-S lens 15-85 at 15mm, f/4, ISO 1600, 30 seconds exposure. Although wide angle it covers only half of the meteor's track. Depending on day of observation and latitude the earthgrazers may appear slightly earlier or later, but for mid-northern latitudes it is around 11PM that the radiant lies smack on the horizon and offers a chance to see earthgrazers. Try every night next few days.
