Details:
This evening two favorable circumstances gave rise to the unusual sight of the waxing Crescent Moon becoming clearly visible in the sky before sunset. First there was a layer of low smoke haze close to the horizon which attenuated the ambient light sufficiently to allow the Moon to become visible while the Sun was still shining brightly. Second the now four day old Crescent Moon had risen sufficiently high in the western sky to be well above the hazy sunset glare. In the first photograph taken at 17.13 LT the Crescent Moon has become visible while the late afternoon Sun is still above the horizon. The second photograph is a close-up of the Crescent Moon taken seven minutes later. The third photograph taken at 17.26 shows the Sun in process of setting and the fourth image captured moments later shows the Crescent Moon now shining quite brightly high above above the setting Sun. The bird visible in two of the photographs is a Swallow foraging for insects brought out by warm spring sunshine. The photographs were taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in sunset scenery mode.
