Details:
Around 8:30pm tonight, I was observing a Chinese lantern crossing the western sky. As I turned to the north, it appeared the neighbor was shining a series of spotlights into the sky. I quickly realized that what I was observing was not spotlights but auroral pillars strikingly poised in the northern sky. I quickly grabbed my camera and took a couple of shots. The display lasted about 30 minutes or so with periods of bright curtains of green and pinks and pale yellow and magenta pillars. As the display began to diminish, an Iridium flare brightened in the magenta sky. Images were captured with a Canon 60Da and a Sigma 17-50mm lens @ 17mm. ISO 1000, f/2.8 and exposures of 25 to 30 seconds.
