Details:
Here I am combining a smartphone camera (13MP) with entry-level 10x25 binoculars. Although the results cannot compare with telescopes or cameras with big zoom, many surface features of the moon are detailed. The first image is a cropping of the second image, the original, from last night. It was taken with both smartphone and binoculars resting on a flat, stable surface. Other images from yesterday captured parts of the moon more clearly, but this image was one of the best overall. The third image is from last week and shows that large lunar features can be resolved even during daytime. As far as I recall, this was a handheld shot, something possible considering an exposure time of 1/475 sec. In the GIF loop, the cropped image is shown in color and B&W and then with a modelled moon from Stellarium. In the last image from June, we can see the tendency for smartphones to overexpose the moon, especially when it occupies only a small portion of the field of view. For this reason it is advisable to zoom the smartphone substantially. A large, bright moon will force the aperture to close, allowing surface features to be photographed.
