Details:
We observed a transient red glow from a thunderstorm, as seen from Voronino village, east of Sergiev Posad, Russia. The glow lasted of the order of 1-3 seconds and was seen on several occasions, often a minute or more apart on 2016 Aug 02 ~18:30UT. A previous image of the red glow effect was shown on spaceweather.com earlier - see: http://spaceweathergallery.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=127900&PHPSESSID=a3dbn5ereli9b1os0oukih8es5 . These two new views (auto-color stretch used) show the thundercloud with the transient red glow, and an earlier image which shows the thundercloud before the red glow effect had really got started. You can also see a video, albeit a bit on the dark side, on http://users.aber.ac.uk/atc/videos/red_glow%202.mpg . This shows the build up of the red glow, and if you listen carefully you can hear a faint clap of thunder about 12 sec after the red glow, followed by a louder clap of thunder from the subsequent white/blue flash of lightening, which often came a few sec after the red glow effect. My own direction and distance calculations suggest that the thunder cloud lay a few hundred meters south of the village of Malinniki. We are very puzzled by this transient red glow effect and have never seen this in any previous thunder storm activity. A search of the web has revealed nothing similar. Does anybody know what it might be?
