Details:
With the summer milky way high in the sky we wanted to test the suitability of Theta S images for stacking, as is common for astro imaging. We did a sequence of tracked full-sky shots from a dark location on La Palma Island. The result turned out fine, proving that it is possible to shoot low-light celestial objects such as the milky way and the zodiacal light with the Theta S. We did 25 exposures of 60 seconds at ISO 800 each for the sky and for the landscape. The individual images were stacked with Deep Sky Stacker and the two stacks were combined with Photoshop. The resulting 360 degree image shows the bright galactic center above the pitch black volcanic landscape of La Palma island. The full band of the Milky Way is clearly visible as it crosses the zenith. Some minor orange light pollution is present from a nearby village as well as the strong green airglow that was active during June. The full 360 degree sphere can be viewed here: https://theta360.com/s/hG3QnqAB4DCgLEJzGVF20E8K8 More Theta S night sky panoramas are displayed here: http://www.project-nightflight.net/tests.html?29 On our website we also provide a more comprehensive article on how to use the Theta S for night sky photography.
