Details:
As a seasoned aurora observer I always request a window seat toward north on night flights. Last night I was flying from NYC to Seattle. Before flight I checked Kp which was 4, not enough to see auroras on the ground for most places, but it's promising as the flight path brought me deep into high geomagnetic latitude, and i would be high in the air. Indeed not long after we left New York state a low, diffusive aurora dome began to materialize. The dome grew higher and slightly brighter as we entered Minnesota. It remained fairly stable, but for a few minutes when we were over Montana around local midnight a substorm hit. Suddenly a bright aurora curtain inside the dome appeared with rapid curvy movements. It was bright enough for me to take a few (rather grainy) photos with nothing more than an iPhone! There was also a thunderstorm going on beneath. Amazing to see lightning lit clouds under the auroras. Definitely a memorable flight.
