Details:
Yesterday a supernova was discovered in the galaxy Messier 66 by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) at Haleakala in Hawaii. This was confirmed by Greg Bock at the Gold Coast last night. I managed to image the galaxy tonight from Brisbane and compared it to an image I took last month. You can see that there is a "new" ("nova") star in one of the spiral arms of the galaxy. All other stars in the images are from our own galaxy. Messier 66 is about 36 million light years away.
