Details:
These photos, taken between 20:04 and 20:25 UT with a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX300 camera, show clouds of aerosols at sunset. Initially dark, contrasting with the white cirrus clouds above them, they first acquired an exotic yellow-golden hue that turned pink a couple of minutes after sunset, fading less than 15 minutes later. That feature allowed us to conclude that they were in fact in the troposphere. In addition, the current absence of widespread fires in Rio`s surroundings could also lead us to suspect that they could have a volcanic origin. Could then Chile`s 2.84 km-high Villarrica stratovolcano be the source of the ashes? It erupted on April 03 and then on May 10, spectacularly lighting up the beautiful lenticular clouds around it throughout the night. In any case, that goes as mere speculation.
