Details:
This was one of those over the top auroras for my latitude. Literally. It was great all along the northern horizon. Then a fountain of light to the west, becoming bright solid looking, then twisting and stretching across the sky and meeting up with a fountain of light from the east, straight over head near the dipper. A bright band of twisting light from the east to the west, straight up above us and slightly to the south, at it’s most intense twisting like a candy cane. Green horizontal pillars, like ribs, shooting out to the north from the band. Racing to the west faster than any cloud, jet, or sat, maybe the speed of a slow meteor. The only thing I've seen move faster across the sky would be meteors. I started before dark and could pick it up in the north by 9:30, continued all night. This was one of the better ones, and more fun since I had one of my boys with me. He was able to verify what I thought I was seeing. Like the light switch effect. Suddenly the whole sky will lighten or darken like someone has hit a switch. Nothing gradual about it. Keller, Washington Canon SX50, 3200 15 and 20 seconds.
