Details:
These photos, taken with a Sony HX300 camera between 21:03 and 21:08 UT, show Mercury setting. This evening apparition of the elusive planet has been very unfavorable for observers situated in mid-southern latitudes such as Rio. Thus the elevation of Mercury at today`s sunset was 10° and I spotted it with my camera (using 50 times zoom) half an hour later, when it was 3.6° above the horizon. In spite of its current 1.3 magnitude, Mercury is not accessible to unaided vision any more from Rio, and in fact it barely was during this eastern elongation. The last photo shows the planet hiding behind a hill located 4 km away when its altitude was a mere 2.6°.
