Details:
This apparition of Mercury is not favorable at all for observers located in the Southern Hemisphere. Nevertheless, here are some photos of the young Moon (3.1% illuminated) and the elusive Mercury 5.8° apart. They were taken around 21h UT from Rio de Janeiro (23° Southern latitude, near the Tropic of Capricorn), where the ecliptic and the horizon are currently meeting at an angle of approximately 44° at the position of the Sun. As a consequence, when these photos were taken, the elevations of Mercury, the Moon and the Sun were only: 5°, 11° and -5°, respectively, in spite of the current 16° elongation of the planet. A Sony DSC-HX300 camera was used for the shots. Optical zooms ranging between 30 and 100 times were used for the shots. It was quite a challenge getting Mercury and the Moon visible in the same photo because there was a nearby building that was obstructing my Western horizon up to 4.5°.
