Details:
Comet 252P/LINEAR is seen in the pre dawn sky on March 26, 2016. On March 21st, LINEAR made a historic close pass of Earth. This pass was the fifth closest approach of any comet to date. A bright waining gibbous moon in nearby Virgo made photography difficult this evening. The Ptolemy cluster and the M6 open cluster can be seen in the left of the photograph. This image was made of 27 fifteen second exposures with a Canon 70D and a Canon 100 mm f/2 lens @ f/4.0. (ISO 400). I have never seen a comet with such a large, diffuse coma to date. This object was certainly a challenge to photograph!

This comet is quite reminiscent of comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock, which sailed past the Earth in early May of 1983. In my minds naked-eye, I can still see its large, bright coma near the star Kochab in Ursa Minor on the morning of May 10th. In a 6-inch reflector at 30X, you could see the comets motion against the starry backdrop from minute to minute!

Hope to get a look at 252P tomorrow morning; with its large size and moon nearby, it will be a challenge.
