Details:
Atigun Pass is the highest (and in my opinion most majestic) mountain pass in Alaska. Shortly after I began photographing the area, a large avalanche demolished the road, which was closed for nearly a full day. I was unfortunately on the wrong side of the pass at the time (on the "North Slope" as they say) and was forced to spend the night (at a balmy -27F) photographing auroras from the middle of the road -- which was happily free of traffic, courtesy of the avalanche. Photos taken with a D800e. 14-24mm and 12mm fisheye lenses. 1600 ISO. More at www.benhattenbach.com
