Details:
On March 141/5 we saw a wonderful display of aurora as twilight deepened and curtains appeared to the east in the blue sky of twilight and moonlight from the light of the 6-day Moon. The display became very active to the north then moved south. A curtain formed along the southern horizon above the abandoned Churchill Rocket Range. About 12:30 am this curtain erupted with activity and rapid motion, with greens, yellows and pinks obvious to the naked eye. Curtains converged at the zenith to form the most impressive of aurora phenomena, the overhead coronal burst. The lights were still strong by 2 am but had subsided into post-substorm pulsing patches and glows. This was all from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Churchill, Manitoba. We got this night as a bonus, as severe weather the day before had shut down the runway cancelling our evening flight this night. No one was complaining about the change of plans! It gave our last aurora tour group of the season the best show of their week-long stay.
