I like to think of myself as versed in atmospheric phenomena, but this one has me stumped. I stepped out for an early morning run on the beach in Tulum, Mexico, and as I stretched in front of the pre-dawn sky I noticed this faint blue-green beam shooting out from the horizon. I ran back to my room to grab my phone and take a few shots as it intsensified. I'm guessing it was some sort of crepuscular ray, as a smaller sibling ray began to take shape to the left (north) of this one. In any case, this galactic beam made me glad to be awake.

It is a shadow by a mountain peak, an island or a cloud and so on. This is also a sort of crepuscular ray. Strictly speaking, the other parts than the shadow gap are rays. Usually, some radial beams of sunlit air are separated by darker gaps by clouds. In this case the source of darker gap was one, so you can see the shadow as a blue/green dark beam.
As the sun rises or sets, the relative location between the shadow-maker and the sun changes, and the ray behavior also changes.

ID the direction, google earth, and see what could be casting that shadow!
