Details:
Feb 12 started out with a dim aurora across the north as seen from Churchill Manitoba. This is a panorama from late evening (about 11 pm) of the faint aurora which was just visible to the eye but very photogenic to the camera in long exposures at high ISO speeds and wide apertures. In this case, these curtains were primarily red from high altitude oxygen, with only the very bottom of the curtains penetrating low enough to excite the green auroral line. This was from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Feb 12, 2016. Later that night the aurora exploded in intensity for a spectacular all-sky display. At left here is the Milky Way in Cygnus and Cepheus in the northwest. Just left of centre is the star Vega, here circumpolar at 58° N latitude. At right is the star Arcturus. Jupiter is on the right edge of the frame. This is a panorama, stitched in Adobe Camera Raw, of 4 segments, each 10 seconds, with the 20mm Sigma Art lens at f/1.4 and Nikon D750 at ISO 3200.
