Details:
These are images from the evening of Feb 9 of the classic auroral oval arcing across the northern sky as seen from Churchill, Manitoba, at a latitude of 58° N. The first image shows multiple bands and curtains along the auroral oval. As is typical, the main curtains appear green but are fringed on top by red/magenta tints, with all colours here coming from glowing oxygen. But only at the highest altitudes in the thinnest of atmospheric density can oxygen glow red.
The Kp Index was low all night, no more than 2, but the Northern Lights still put on a good show for us at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. The first image is a single 20-second exposure, the second image is a stack of 250 15-second exposures shot for a time-lapse but here stacked into a star trail showing the northern circumpolar stars rotating about Polaris. Both were with the 15mm full-frame fish-eye lens and Canon 6D camera.
