Details:
Was guiding for Lights Over Lapland tonight. Weather forecast showed 100% cloud cover and the solar activity was looking low. But my 8 guests from the UK saw the brightest and fastest moving aurora I've ever seen in the 4 years I've been photographing aurora. We had intermittent cloud with some nice displays and one of my clients asked "why has it become much lighter?".
The aurora got so bright I had to take the shutter speed to 1/5 of a second. What a display with greens and purples.
I'd assumed that the solar activity had done something special but when I got back and checked it looked like it had stayed fairly low. So not sure what triggered the amazing display we saw tonight...
