This was a wonderful way to see in the New Year. Auroral activity was ongoing in differing strengths from 20:40 through to 02:30hrs on the 1st January. The Bz maintained its southerly 15.6 position; the KP was 5. The wind speed was gentle though didnt exceed 467. The proton density was low too, at its most was around 7. I think this accounted for the subtlety of the colours along with the late rising crescent moon which maintained the pastel colours. The display structure was billowy with pulsating skies overhead and low level green strirations. All in all a wonderfully long, very very cold evening and the best light show to see in 2016. I OOO'd and Ahhh'd alone, in the dark. Camera settings: Canon 40D; manual F4.0 ISO1250-1600; exposure 15-25 seconds variable.
