Details:
On the night of Oct 24/25 we were treated to a short-lived display of aurora in the northeast, starting at about 1:20 am MDT. The aurora coincided with the hugely popular Jasper Dark Sky Festival, in Jasper, Alberta, Canada (latitude 53° N). Earlier in the day, as one of the Festival's guest speakers, I gave a talk about the Northern Lights, with many of the Festival's visitors from around the world no doubt hoping to see a display during their stay. As luck would have it, alerts were calling for a "red" level 5 display starting after midnight. I passed that info along to my audience of 200 or 300 people in my talk and that night, many made their way to this site, around Jasper's Pyramid Lake, with its clear view to the north and northeast, to catch the display. Those who were patient and waited till after 1am (an hour later than I had foretold!) were rewarded with a nice display above the moonlit mountain nightscape.
