Celebrating the Halloween Auroras of 2003!
The grand auroras of October 29th, 30th & 31st, 2003 were extremely powerful as they passed overhead in Alaska from time to time, before dancing over the curvature of the Earth closer to equatorial locales. This powerful display occurred on the downslope of Solar Cycle 23, with many of it's variables sending scientific indices values off the scale. Geomagnetic storms of this magnitude have not happened so far within Solar Cycle 24, which has now quietly moved beyond its peak.
