Details:
A smokey moon blushed red and faded from view before reaching the horizon last night. Montana currently has 65 wildfires burning, 21 of them more than 100 acres in size and covering an estimated 52,570 acres. To date, Montana has reported 1,116 human-caused (38,659 acres) and 745 lightning-caused fires (79,495 acres).

Sounds like a lot, doesn't it? But acreage-wise, we've only burned about one-third of our 10-year average (118,154 to 338,252), so far. And the Great Fire of 1910 burned more than three million acres in Montana and northern Idaho in just two days.

Most of the ash sent into the atmosphere from wildfires is smaller than 1 micron, which is wider than the wavelength of red light (0.7 micron). Smoke particles scatter the narrower blue wavelengths and leave the moon looking reddish-orange.
