Details:
As I stared at the LCD monitor of my camera, adjusting its settings to capture earthshine, I noticed intriguing irregularities in the form of two arches that protruded from the mean terminator of the overexposed Moon. They looked like the claws of a crab. In order to investigate them, I gradually reduced the exposure and found the answer to the puzzle. The Sun had just risen as seen from the top of mountains that form the eastern rim of Mare Crisium, while the lower terrains surrounding them still remained in darkness. The photos were taken on August 17 around 21:10 UT with a Canon SX60 HS camera when the Moon was 9.5% illuminated.
