Hurricane Hilda is churning in the Pacific and heading towards Hawaii where we live. Earlier in the day on August 10th, I was checking the National Weather Service discussion about what was happening/projected and the report said there had been an outburst of intense lightning in the storm this afternoon. Putting two and two together I wondered if the storm was close enough to be captured by the CFHT (Canada France Hawaii Telescope) CloudCam atop Maunakea. But more than that, I have also been on a never ending mission to see some sprites (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprite_(lightning)). I wondered if there was any chance of capturing them? So last night, after the Sun had set and some time had passed, I logged on to the CloudCam site to check the most recent two-hour timelapse loop, and sure enough, WE HAD SPRITES!!! The attached image is a compilation of all of the frames in the video (also attached) where sprites are visible. I did some image processing to enhance the contrast and pull out some more detail.
