Details:
After a brief rain shower, the sky cleared up after sunset and so we headed to downtown Lowell, Mass., to photograph the Venus-Jupiter conjunction. We chose the winged statue of “Victory” in front of Lowell City Hall as foreground. The first photo shows the statue before all the streetlights turned on. Venus and Jupiter were already getting low in the sky by the time twilight had faded enough for the two planets to show up clearly in the exposures. According to the inscription on the base of the Victory statue, it was a gift to the people of Lowell from James C. Ayer (a wealthy local businessman after whom the Massachusetts town of Ayer was named), and the statue was erected on July 4, 1867 (it will be 148 years old this Saturday!). Details: Canon EOS 5D Mark II on a fixed tripod and a Canon EF 24-105 mm f/4L lens.
