Details:
Those of us in Ohio yesterday evening witnessed an interesting display of the Sun without a solar filter. The clouds acted in such a way as to block the majority of the Sun's light and allow a bit of it through with minimal distortion or color loss (which typically happens with clouds.) In other words, it acted almost exactly like a solar filter. A question that arises from this: if displays like this are possible, then how come we doubt ancient peoples knew about sunspots?

I saw that it was pretty much accepted that sunspots have been seen and recorded for over 400 years. There is a drawing of a sunspot done in 1182. And the Chinese recorded sunspots for a thousand years before that but no drawings until 1400 AD for some reason.
