That is an amazing capture !!! Imagine how big it looked to the folks on the island. Oscar van der Velde is the expert so well have to wait and see. My guess would have to be a gigantic jet.

It seems too beautiful to be true !

Perfect balance & settings to catch the city lights, the lighting lights, a blue (gigantic ?) jet, right in the clouds hole...

Could you share your settings ?

I write in English, for the common comprehension, even if you are in the French West Indies and me, from the French capital ;-)

After a few research, new comments :

1) According to the description on this web page (more detailed than many others), this event is clearly a -Blue Jet-, which occur mainly over seas, as on your picture :

2) Did you use a kind of photoelectric cell for camera ?
Because, the common way to shoot lightning (or blue jet / sprite !) is to set long exposure time. In this case, the city lights would have -burn- the picture.

3) I have seen this picture on your Flickr Muscapix account (awesome warbirds pictures too, I love it !).

Could you give us more info about the shooting ?

Why do you post this picture nearly 7 month after the shooting (according to the date that you mentioned) ?

I found the pic in flickr and told him he should post it here to get some expert opinions as to what this is. Here is the info he sent me: This was taken in St. Barth back in October 30, 2014 at 8:39pm local time. He was facing north and used a Sony RX100 with a 28mm lens at F/1.8 for 30 seconds and Iso 200. This camera gives you 20.2 megapixels and uses a Vario-Sonnar lens. The low Iso of 200 probably wouldnt be enough to capture the red plume and the clouds would have hidden it also so its tough to say for sure what it is.

Désolé pour le manque de communication sur les exif, jai poster ces images sur les conseils de Mr Frankie Lucena qui ma envoyer le liens de ce site web et je nai pas eu le temps den approfondir le fonctionnement... je vais y remédier ;)
Mais les exif sont: Sony RX100 28mm 30sec f1.8 iso200 RAW

Sylvain, pour répondre a vos questions :

Non aucune cellule na été utilisé, seulement 30 sec dexposition.
Du coup sur-exposition évidentes par les lumières de la ville comme vous le faite remarquer, mais heureusement que le format choisi est le RAW (bien que malheureusement compressé) , ce qui nous donne une flexibilité exceptionnel de post-traitement.
Ceci couplé avec plusieurs fusion dexposition et de HDR mélangés et patchés par zones et plage des couleurs dans un processus long et indescriptible pour tenté de rétablir une teinte naturelle au bas de l image.
Le tout, bien sur, sans dénaturé le haut de la photo pour conservé la couleur et l aspect du blue-jet .
il faut savoir que ce sont les réglages , le cadrage et lappareil de mon ami Elka Liot , nous avions 3 cameras braquées sur l orage, Elka cest absenté un moment , jai déclencher plusieurs fois à sa place et nous avons eux le privilège incroyable de capturé cet événement si rare !

7 mois se sont écoulé entre la prise de vue et la mise en ligne pour plusieurs raisons:
- un long , très long post traitement pour trouvé le bon équilibre entre la qualité visuel et lintérêt scientifique de l image.
-un choix à faire entre les 4 ou 5 versions finals des quelles jétait incapable de faire un choix.
-avant de la rendre publique jai contacter divers magazines dit scientifique qui sont resté très grossièrement sans réponses.
-puis après concertation avec Elka Liot, nous nous somme dit : wattermark et mise en ligne sur ma galerie, ce qui est, je pense le meilleur moyen de diffusion , de référencement et de protection à notre porté.

Effectivement, pour ne pas avoir -brûlé- limage de la ville avec une pose de 30s, il doit y avoir une bonne dose de traitement HDR !

Clairement, comme dit, il sagit dun Blue Jet, pas dun Gigantic Jet, on voit bien malgré les nuages que le -jet- se termine, sans sagrandir et -virer- au rouge.

Photo incroyable...jai rarement vu 62 -pouces vert-...BRAVO !!

Indeed, to not have -burn- the picture with the city lights during a 30s exposure, HDR and post treatment have been clearly necessary.

Clearly, its a Blue Jet, not a Gigantic one, we can see that it -stops- (even with the clouds) and is not turning large and red.

Amazing picture, I saw -62 thumb up- very rarely. CONGRATULATIONS !
