Indications are that aerosols from the first eruption of the Calbuco Volcano on April 22 have circumnavigated Earth and are now back to Rio`s sunset skies. I spotted the first effects of their presence on April 24 and monitored the bulk of the volcanic plume on April 26, 27 and 28 as it was heading east at altitudes up to 23 km (as I estimated on April 27). Its traces lingered over Rio for a week after that. In the weeks that followed, vivid purple and pink Calcubo sunsets were observed in Africa and Australia. Today these colors (associated to the presence of volcanic aerosols) could be captured again by my Canon PowerShot SX60 HS camera (at vivid color mode), as I was taking shots of the western sky shortly after sunset. Note the purple and pink glows above ordinary clouds up to 50° altitude, captured when the sun was 4° below the horizon. Also note the trail left by an airplane when it passed through the plume (first photo), possibly hinting at the presence of aerosols about 10 km high. To the unaided eye however, excepting the very bright red on the western horizon, no other unusual coloration was visible, suggesting that the plumes are now much more tenuous than three weeks ago.
