Effects of Calbuco`s Plume over Rio

The third consecutive evening twilight under the effects of Calbuco`s plume was still amazing, though the effects caused by its aerosols were less extensive, having lasted only 20 minutes (from 10 to 30 minutes after sunset) and spanned a smaller area of the western sky. These photos were taken around 20:45 UT with a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS on tripod. Apparently, the lingering plume of sulfur dioxide over Rio is now quicky dissipating, mostly blown to the Atlantic Ocean by strong winds at great altitudes. These powerful eruptions of Calbuco will probably reduce significantly the brightness of the Moon at mid-eclipse on Sept. 27. Considering the path of the Moon across Earth`s umbra, I had predicted it would be shining roughly as bright as Jupiter at mid-totality. Now, I would guess it will be roughly twice less bright, possibly rivaling Sirius or even Canopus at mid-eclipse, depending on the total amount of aerosols thrown into the stratosphere by Calbuco`s eruptions. Our dedicated REA-Brazil team of experienced Lunar Eclipse Observers will be checking that out.
