I awoke this morning to find that the recent CME produced by an erupting AR2297 on March 15th had reached Earth. My magnetometer data showed a large spike at 04:46 UT, indicating first contact between the CME and our Magnetosphere- a magnetic bubble which surrounds the Earth and protects us from the high energy, fast flowing solar particles projected our way by such an event. It is estimated that the CME's average speed is around 1.9 million miles/hr (850km/s). This is somewhat slower than the fastest CMEs recorded, but the magnetic spike is one of the fastest such transient events I've seen.
