Details:
Here are Mercury and Venus near their closest conjunction this week, about 40 arc minutes apart, on Sunday, January 11. I shot the planets through a refractor telescope with a focal length of about 400mm. I managed to catch them between aircraft contrail clouds lit by the evening twilight. Mercury pulls away from Venus after this close approach as Mercury climbs up toward its greatest elongation on January 14.
