Details:
Here is Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) as it begins its trek through Taurus. This was Saturday evening, January 10, 2015. The comet is at lower right. At left is Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster; at top left is the Pleiades. This is a "normal" lens view taken with a 35mm lens on a Canon 60Da, for a stack of 4 x 1-minute exposures at ISO 1600 and f/2, with the camera on a Star Adventurer tracking device. Some light cloud drifting through added some patchiness to the sky. The comet was easily visible to the naked eye from a dark site as a fuzzy star. But unless you knew exactly what you were looking for you would not recognize as a comet. It is much more obvious in binoculars as a bright glow, with a faint tail visible. It is a fine binocular comet and photogenic target.
