I was photographing the aurora around midnight, a series of shots for a GIF file. When I looked at the completed GIF, I noticed a reddish 'star' that glowed for several frames, with a tail similar to that of a comet. The object seemed to be stationary, relative to the stars; it did not streak across the sky in the manner of a meteor or satellite. Neither did it remain in the sky, in the manner of a comet. I don't know what it was.
I checked the star chart, compared the northern constellations with your field of view. I think the red object is the Garnet Star (mu Cep). Their position seem to coincide.
The Garnet Star is a red supergiant with 4 mag recently (variable).
Your photos have a strong coma aberration, where all the stars have tails (i.e. coma) towards the outside of field of view. The Garnet Star is very red, so is its reddish coma conspicuous unlike other non-red stars?
If you can take the similar photo in the same field of view, I suggest capturing the reddish object on the right-hand side in the field of view?
