Details:
CME impact turned off the lights! I was returning home from an aurora hunters gathering over the weekend, and I saw that Bz had dropped to -10 nT. After a little maneuvering to get out from underneath the clouds, I found a nice shooting location and saw the auroral oval developing. I thought it might be a great night of auroras, but instead, the CME from the November 7 X-1 flare hit, and Bz went strongly north. I watched over the next hour as the auroras retreated northward to the horizon, where they disappeared from my view, aided by the rising moon, which overwhelmed any glow that might have remained.
