Details:
The single image was shot with a Nikon D3S and 300mm f/2.8 lens + 2X teleconverter (600mm equivalent), using a 35-year-old Inconel-coated glass filter (resulting in the slightly orange tint). The composite image was shot with a Nikon D3X and a 58mm lens, using a Singh-Ray 15-stop ND filter (resulting in the Sun appearing "white"). The camera took one exposure every 7 minutes; esposure was unchanged throughout, resulting in the Sun's image getting darker and more orange as it approached the horizon. The sequence started with the Sun entering the frame at maximum obscuration (here in Albuquerque, about 40%), and the sequence ended just after the Sun had set. Note that low clouds had appeared on the western horizon by this time. Following sunset, and without moving the camera, I removed the ND filter and shot an additional image of the foreground. Thus I got 15 properly registered images of the Sun (11 of which show the Sun partially eclipsed, and 4 of which show the Sun after the eclipse had ended). I combined these 15 images with the properly registered image of the foreground to produce the 16-image “stack” seen here.
