Normally to best be able to experience the auroras you need to escape light pollution and city lights. However, on a clear night with no clouds it is not impossible to experience the aurora in combination with city lights. In fact the combination can be quiet a magnificent sight! I have done this combinations shots before, but wanted to do a proper 180 degree panoarama. On Oct 10th Kp was forecasted to 3 at midnight UTC, and weather was really clear. I decided this was the change I had been waiting for. And as forecasted, at approx midnight I got beautiful auroras dancing over my hometown of Tromsø, Norway. The shot is a composition of several images stiched in post. At times the auroras was moving too fast to make stiching possible, but I also got some slover moving lights which made the stiching possible. Tromso is an island. North of Tromso is to the right. You can see the aurora bands are stretching from north-east to south-west. As you see, on clear nights like this, auroras are visible even over a 70,000 population city and light pollution.
