This photo was taken of the eastern horizon shortly after sunset. (iPhone in panorama mode) I'm wondering if it could be the earth's shadow.

It appears as though the large dark band is indeed the earths shadow, also known as the belt of venus, perhaps the shadow of a local uplift/mountain/hill. ALSO, you have anticrepuscular rays, that to may be shadows of geographic features, or shadows from clouds over the horizon. See the link on the homepage for atmospheric optics.
