I find that higher ISOs reduce the vibrance of auroras. I find 1600-2000 decent enough, depending on moonlight. Also, make sure your lens is manually set to infinity focus. Having some foreground can be nice for the photos sake - perhaps use a wider angle lens?

Not that Im very experienced.
