Details:
On February 9, during a lull in the aurora display I shot the halo that was present around the Moon for most of the evening. This is the classic 22° ice crystal halo from high cirrus clouds. But adding to the scene here is an even higher contrail from a polar-route jet making its way from east to west across the continent. The jet itself is at far right. Its contrail is also casting a shadow onto the lower cloud deck - the contrail exhibits small spiral vortices, also visible in the shadow. I shot this from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the shore of Hudson Bay, at a latitude of 58° north.
