Details:
By chance I was taking some solar images just a short time after the flare erupted. The bright area of the flare was immediately noticeable through my H-alpha telescope. I went out again on 1/8 to take a comparison shot, and also captured a decent filtered (Baader) white-light image of the sunspot group 1944.
