Details:
It was partly cloudy... managed to get ISON zoomed in at about 500m, Canon Rebel T2i, short exposures. Comet was estimated a tad brighter than Pan-Starrs with a longer tail. I estimate the tail about 5 degrees strong in this daylight shot. I've included one RAW photo and you can see that the coma is still a Green in color. I have also included another exposed photo to show the tail going behind the cloud a bit. Shows some depth. Also the last photo shows the Nucleus quite ICY color and sharp and dense. Looks healthy! Enjoy.

For sure youll want to wake up at 5am and find a VERY clear spot to the east. It should be very clear and I am going to be taking a photo of it tomorrow morning! 5:20 or so is when it will start to rise. 30 minutes after itll be high enough to glimpse.

I wish there was a Reply button, but to lima396 - The photo was taken about 5:55am - 15 - 20 minutes before the sun was to rise.

The image was mounted to the GoTo telescope tripod but a long exposure was not needed at all. I was fully able to nab this sucker in crystal clear and the exposure was about 400ISO at about 5 Seconds full.

This comet literally looked amazing and just before the dawn light started I could pick out the pin point fuzz ball through the short haze. After it cleared to about 5-7 degrees the shot was on!


Rocksnstars - I think any comet that would be captured like this is amazing. But you have to remember that EVERY comet is brighter and more active after Perihelion of the Sun. This is very good for it being PRE-Perihelion. Just wait for the first week of December. I think this may just be about a Magnitude -6 to about -8 around the sun... Granted, Mcnaught of 2007 was ONLY -5.5.

It will be a bright one, regardless. Been studying this comet and matching its light curves and the outbursts and explosions on it will mean amazing magnitudes. enjoy the show!

Vince, thanks much for the reply. In the last 40 years I have observed 127 comets. And yes, currently it is more interesting than most of the 127 I have seen. But to make people think it is visible when the sun is in the sky (which Im sure at least some interpret daylight as, including Dr. Phillips - I dont know what else could equal living up to the hype) is to set people up for let down. I sent Dr. Phillips an email yesterday, which may or may not be the reason the living up to the hype statement isnt there today. I also put this scaled composite on S&T; the ISON shot is from the Mt Fuji pic - I couldnt use yours because there was nothing to scale with. http://media.skyandtelescope.com/images/comcomp.jpg

It will be very interesting to see what happens with ISON after perihelion, but we aint there yet!
