Hello friends,
I would like to submit a few images of my latest solar scope project. I used a Jeagers f8, 108 mm diameter lens in conjunction with a Baader Hershal Safety Wedge to make a white light solar camera. I like this a lot because now I have a dedicated solar camera without changing over traditional night time refractors for solar use.
My refractor OTA is constructed by way of an aluminum armature that perfectly aligns the Moonlight Technologies Crawford focuser and the Jagers 4 inch objective lens. The mounted lens, by the way, was purchased off of e-bay for a bargain price.
My thought, is that a lot of astro photographers have some solar tools laying about. With a little creativity and some PVC pipe one could build up a dedicated solar scope ready to use at any given time. Of course an existing telescope could be dedicated to this purpose but there are a lot of cost savings and fun in assembling and cobbling together your very own fully functional telescope!
Our "first light" image was made at 10:13:05 CST on 11/03/3013 using a cannon 60Da camera and a safety wedge fitted with a solar continuum and a 3.0 neutral density filter. It shows a big, new sunspot AR1890 and also sunspots 1889,1887,1885,1884,1888,and 1882. The shutter speed was of 1/500 second at f8 with an ISO of 100
